Autumn Gala Banquet
42e Grand Chapitre Britannique
Shaftesbury Place, Aldersgate Street, London, EC2Y 8AA
Friday 28th October 2022
Reception starts 7pm
The UK & Ireland Chapter of the Confrérie du Sabre d'Or is delighted to visit the 'City of London' and present a Gala Banquet at the home the Worshipful Company of Ironmongers - one of the most prestigious Livery Companies in the City.
A Reception of Taittinger Brut NV Champagne will be followed by an excellent 4 course dinner accompanied by further Taittinger and Philippe Brugnon Champagnes, plus the Château Lamothe - Cissac Vieilles Vignes 2017.
110 Livery companies exist within the Square Mile, or 'City of London'. The Worshipful Company of Ironmongers is 10th in order of precedence and as such is described as one of the Great 12 Livery Companies. Only 39 of the 110 Companies have their own Hall.
The Ironmongers' Company had its first Hall built in Fenchurch Street in 1457 at a cost of £100. That was the first of three Halls on the same site. The second survived the Great Fire of London, however the third Hall was bombed by a ‘Gotha G4’ bomber in 1917. Following the bombing, it was decided to relocate and the Company bought the current site at Shaftesbury Place.
The Hall had a very lucky escape in the Second World War as it was one of the few buildings in the area apart from St Paul’s to survive the Luftwaffe. It had another lucky escape in the 1970s when the Corporation of London planned to build the Museum of London. A Compulsory Purchase Order and demolition of Ironmongers’ Hall was fortunately overturned on appeal.
Dress Code is Black Tie with Confrérie and Golden Sabre Regalia.

There will be a very high number of members sabraging to become Chevaliers, or being promoted to higher ranks. Because of this, we will be conducting much of the process and Ceremony of Intronisation, prior to 'doors-open', so it's vital all candidates and their supporters arrive in good time.
If you are Sabraging at this event (or have been invited to support someone that is), please arrive in time to be seated in the Hall and begin the activity at 6.30pm. If you need to check coats or bags, or find friends/supporters, please allow time for this as well.
Those becoming Chevaliers and Officiers will each Sabrage a Magnum of Taittinger Brut Champagne. New Commandeurs and Grand Commandeurs will sabrage Jerobaoms and Methusalems from Philippe Brugnon.
There will be no discounted accommodation arranged for this event.
Hope to see you there!!
