The Confrérie at the Chelsea Flower Show

Our annual visit saw the usual galaxy of celebrities and stars delighted to take up the sabre.

For the last five years, and now an established annual event for us, is the Preview Day of the Chelsea Flower Show, held in May. On the day, a number of celebrities tour the stands and are attracted to John Amand’s Gold Medal winning display.

Anglea Rippon Moira Stewart SMALL

Moira Stewart and Angela Rippon crossing swords  with Gerard O’Shea, and Julian White.

In 2009, we sabraged Patricia Hodge and the late Geoff Hughes, well known for his parts in Keeping Up Appearances and Heartbeat.

In 2010, we returned to sabrage Piers Morgan, who said that Julian White was barking mad; Floella Benjamin, who was created a baroness a few days later,  and  Tim Wonnacott of Bargain Hunt. Piers’ sabrage was near perfect, but Tim’s was a trifle ugly.

Gloria Hunniford SMALL

Gloria Hunniford, wearing somewhat appropriate colours, appears to have astonished John Hough with the deftness of her sweep.

In 2011, John’s stand was visited by Raymond Blanc, Gloria Hunniford and Jerry Hall amongst many others.

Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen SMALL

Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen perfectly illustrates the best thing about sabrage; it’s never long ’til there’s a glass of champagne in your hand!

In 2012, we were delighted with some expert sabrage from Angela Rippon, Moira StuartJenny Bond and Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen. Later Downton Abbey’s head butler – Jim Carter came along bringing Imelda Staunton adding two more effortless swipes.

Ester Rantzen SMALL

Esther Rantzen with John Amand. Esther’s loveliness is perfectly accentuated here by yellow posies and a copy of our very excellent magazine, ‘The Golden Sabre’.

Last year, our celebrities included Maureen Lipman and Esther Rantzen who proved that the ladies sabrage perfectly since they do not apply unnecessary force. They were followed by Joanna Lumley who executed a perfect sabrage. Later on, along came Nicholas Parsons to finish off the day, without hesitation or repetition.

Joanna Lumley SMALL

Joanna Lumley OBE made an absolutely fabulous swipe overseen by Gerard. Joanna is revered in Nepal for her tireless campaigning for Gurkha’s rights so shares a great deal in common with our esteemed Ambassador Emeritus, Julian White

So this year we returned to join Commandeur John Amand for some sabrage amongst the gardens.  Once again a Gold Medal was awarded for his display but not before some corks were flying from Sgt Johnson Beharry, who was awarded the Victoria Cross for his valorous action at Al-Amarah, Iraq, in 2004.

Sgt Beharry

Sgt Johnson Beharry, winner of the Victoria Cross, showing again his great courage by allowing Julian anywhere near him with a sword.

We also sabraged Vanessa Feltz, Carluccio and Adam Henson of BBC’s Countryfile, who made a perfect cut, equal of that of Sgt Beharry VC!

Carluccio SMALL

Antonio Carluccio, world famous Italian chef and restaurateur, in conversation with Gerrad.

And finally, Piers Morgan returned, to speak to Johnson Beharry and to remind Julian that he is still barking mad!
